Sprout Creek Farm Internship Program

Sprout Creek Farm is extremely committed to our internship program. Our goal is to provide a great learning
experience for interns while continuing an exceptionally high level of care for our farm, the animals, and the programs
that we offer. Commitment to high quality work is always rewarded with opportunity. Interns are expected to work hard,
but also to enjoy their time here as much as possible while developing a valuable, practical, and marketable skill set
only possible through hands-on work at Sprout Creek Farm.
While unpaid, internships at the farm are of great value as educational experiences. With a close staff to intern ratio,
interns are a part of the farm family.
Interns must be capable of working independently as well as part of a team. Interns must be available one to two days
a week. Internship opportunities range in length from 3 months to one year, and have a minimum requirement of at
least 3 months. Internship start dates are generally at the beginning of the following months: January, June, and
September.

*All Internships are unpaid and no housing is provided*

Internship Opportunities

Animal/Farm Work

Overall Description
This is the opportunity to work on a progressive, integral, educational, and inspiring farm that fosters a mission rooted
in teaching people to understand and appreciate our connection to the earth, its beings, and responsibility for its care.
The animal/farm work internship allows interns to work directly with our farm staff in the daily care of both the animals
on the farm as well as pastures, equipment and structures that provide for both the animals and the visitors to the
farm. Interns will gain experience in maintaining animal health, dairy farm operations, and farming techniques.

Qualifications

This internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting programs at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following
acceptable fields of study: biology, environmental science, veterinary technology, veterinary medicine, agriculture, soil
science, plant science, agronomy, farm management, animal sciences or other related majors. Past experience in a
farm environment is a plus, but not a necessity. However, students must be comfortable working with animals, have
quick reflexes, and be comfortable being outside in all types of weather conditions.

Requirements

Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to
work a minimum of one or two 8 hour shifts per week. This internship requires early morning hours. Typically, farm
staff start their day at 6am. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and navigate challenging outdoor terrain and have
quick reflexes, especially when working with animals.

Duties may include:
● Assist in managing the Farm’s herds to include feeding, milking, and planned grazing
● Maintain, repair, and operate essential equipment; adhering to training provided by supervisors
● Perform daily chores including shoveling, sweeping, and maintaining the cleanliness of all grounds, buildings,
    and animal pens
● Assist with hay production, gardening, and fencing as needed
● Take out whey for cheese production
● Feed chickens and collect eggs
● Help care and tend to all animals on farm
● Perform other duties as assigned

Intern Application

Farm Educator

Overall Description

The Farm’s Education department is responsible for providing educational experiences on the farm that foster an
appreciation for and understanding of the natural world and our place in it as well as our ability to care for the
environment. The Farm Educator Internship offers students the opportunity to assist the farm’s Education Department
in designing, delivering and evaluating school programs, family events and camp experiences. Interns will gain
experience in public speaking,agriculture education, environmental science education, educational program design,
and teaching in both formal and informal settings.

Qualifications

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting programs at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following
acceptable fields of study: biology, education, environmental science, agriculture, animal sciences or other related
majors. Students must be comfortable working with animals and being outside in all types of weather. Previous
experience working with children and/or summer camp programs is a plus though not required.
Requirements
Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to
work a minimum of one or two 8 hour shifts per week. Must be able to navigate challenging outdoor terrain and have
quick reflexes, especially when working with animals.

Duties may include:
● Assist Education Department staff with educational programs for grades K-12 as well as camp experiences
and family programs.
● Develop service learning projects and guide volunteers on the farm
● Lead programs that include tours of the farm, animal encounters and science lessons
● Assist in administrative tasks such as program registration, educational supply inventory and creating program
materials
● Become familiar with all areas of the farm and help develop new programming based on the resources of the
farm

Agriculture/Botany/Food production

Overall Description

Sprout Creek farm has a fully functioning greenhouse and outdoor garden that provides the opportunity to teach about
all aspects of gardening and food production. The garden internship works closely with our Garden Manager as well
as the culinary and market staff to provide seasonal food for our kitchen and market. The garden maintains an active
composting area and maintains a seed to harvest vegetable garden. Garden activities are seasonal and this internship
may not be available during the months of December - February.

Qualifications

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting program at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following
acceptable fields of study: biology, botany (plant sciences), environmental science, sustainable agriculture,
horticulture, agronomy, soil science or other related majors. Students must be comfortable working outside in all types
of weather. Previous experience planting and growing food is preferred but not required.

Requirements

Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Interns are required to work a
minimum of one to two 8 hour shift per week. Students must be comfortable working outside in all types of weather,
able to lift 50 pounds and have some knowledge of gardening equipment.

Duties may include:
● Assist in all areas of garden development from planning of crops; starting seedlings in the greenhouse,
preparing the soil and planting areas, planting and maintaining the crops, harvesting and composting
● The garden is used as a ‘living classroom’ and therefore garden staff is provided opportunities to work with
groups of children to teach them the basics of growing food on a farm
● Seasonal preparations and designing of the garden area for maximum production and necessary crops to
support the kitchen and market

Marketing

Overall Description

As a not for profit educational farm, Sprout Creek Farm relies on its marketing strategy to maximize our ability to
generate an audience for our programs and extend the reach of the farm’s mission into the community. Our farm
places a high value on its ability to provide unique and meaningful experiences to members of the general public,
families and schools. The marketing internship is a way to gain real world experience developing and maintaining a
marketing strategy for a not for profit organization.

Qualifications

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting programs at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following
acceptable fields of study: marketing, advertising, marketing research, public relations, sales management or other
related majors. Past experience in retail or marketing as well as familiarity with social media strategies and platforms
is preferred but not required.

Requirements

Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to
work a minimum of two, 8 hour shift per week.

Duties may include:
● Help create and distribute marketing materials
● Help organize farm events and create promotional materials
● Manage and update event databases and customer relationship management
● Assist in marketing and advertising promotional activities (e.g. social media, direct mail, and web)
● Prepare detailed promotional presentations
● Monitor all social media platforms for trending news, ideas, and feedback

Culinary Arts

Overall Description

This culinary internship is intended to help transition the candidate from the educational realm of cooking to the “real
world” working environment. Working at Sprout Creek Farm will be a fantastic opportunity for the right candidate to
sharpen their skills, increase their knowledge of the “farm to table” concept, as well as recognizing the importance of
industry networking. Our culinary staff creates unique dishes and events based on the seasonal availability of foods as
well as trends in the industry.

Qualifications

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting programs at an accredited college or university. Students must be enrolled in one of the following
acceptable fields of study:culinary arts, food science, baking and pastry arts, food service, nutrition or other related
majors. The candidate will be dedicated; reliable; flexible; punctual; open minded (especially to constructive criticism);
creative; and motivated. The candidate must have plenty of stamina, have good communication skills, have a good
eye for detail, and must be able to keep calm under pressure.

Requirements

Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to
work a minimum of one or two 8 hour shifts per week. Students must be comfortable walking and standing for long
periods of time. Requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, and visual
acuity.Must be able to lift up and transport up to 50 pounds. Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary
equipment. . Above all, this candidate MUST be passionate about food and learning.

Duties may include:
● Duties will include, but will not be limited to, helping the Chef with all prep and execution of events
● Menu-planning
● Kitchen sanitation; kitchen organization
● Brainstorming and problem solving.

Intern Application

Farm Management

Overall Description

This is a limited opportunity for a candidate to work directly with a farm director. Sprout Creek Farm manages milking
herds of both cows and goats as well as pasture raised pigs, chickens, and ducks. The farm director oversees all
production,breeding programs, business planning, pasture and field management, equipment maintenance as well as
the health and husbandry of the animals. Our farm’s mission statement of education is driving the opportunity for an
individual to learn the skills necessary to oversee dairy farm operations.

Qualifications

The internship is open to students who are currently enrolled, or recently graduated (within 1 year) in 2 or 4 year
degree-granting programs at an accredited college or university. It is preferred that the candidate has already acquired
an undergraduate degree. Students must be enrolled in one of the following acceptable fields of study:farm or ranch
management,agribusiness, agricultural studies, animal science, animal husbandry, animal genetic breeding, dairy
science, animal production science, or other related majors.

Requirements

Students must be able to meet the minimum internship length requirement of 3 months. Also, students are required to
work a minimum of one or two 8 hour shifts per week. Students must be comfortable walking and standing for long
periods of time. Requires being outdoors in all types of weather and on rough terrain. Must be able to lift 50 pounds
repeatedly and often. Must have mental stamina and quick reflexes to work with animals. Must be comfortable around
animals and performing medical treatments. Must have previous farm work experience.

Duties may include:
● Preparing and implementing budgets and monitoring financial performance
● budgeting and maintaining accurate financial records
● handling paperwork and keeping administrative records
● recruiting, training/instructing and supervising farm workers
● making sure that work progresses satisfactorily
● ensuring compliance with government regulations and health and safety standards
● keeping an up-to-date knowledge of pests and diseases
● ensuring that the farm is profitable and meets projected financial targets
● organising maintenance/repair of farm property, equipment and machinery
